360-degree approach for employees: ING boosts motivation and engagement

Your employees as your greatest capital

Within your organisation, your employees are your greatest capital. As an established major bank, active in more than 50 countries and with thousands of employees, ING knows this all too well.

How do you take good care of that capital? It's a question that is keeping many a CEO awake today. Because the pressure and crowds are not getting any less, and wellbeing in the workplace all too often suffers as a result. Moreover, there is no one-size-fits-all approach: what is essential for one employee may be unnecessary for another.

To meet these challenges, Golazo Energy and Better Minds - in close cooperation with ING's management and HR - developed a tailor-made concept.

From scan to personal wellbeing journey

The intervention starts with a Human Energy Scan: a science-based questionnaire that clearly identifies the individual needs and preferences of ING employees. Based on their results, participants are then assigned to one of 9 Energy Journeys: wellbeing journeys focusing on as many wellbeing topics. These include: mental resilience, focus management, healthy nutrition, purpose, stress management, work enjoyment, sleep, exercise, trust and psychological safety.

In May 2023, Vitality Boost had a soft launch for a small group; the feedback gathered from this ensured further optimisation of the approach. The first participants also immediately became ambassadors of the Vitality Boost Programme.

In September 2023, it was time for a wider launch and roll-out. We also supported our client in terms of internal communication, a crucial element if you want to make a difference on a larger scale. Posting, digital screens, online presence, personalised energy bars, active breaks and meditation sessions: these are just some of the many actions we undertook to increase engagement with the Vitality Boost Programme.

‍The Energy Journeys of the Vitality Boost Programme consist of 8-week trajectories in which participants work on a wellbeing topic relevant to them.

Our experts guide participants through each next step towards greater wellbeing. In doing so, we implement a variety of working methods:

  • Live workshops in small groups
  • 1-on-1 coaching sessions
  • Inspiring challenges
  • Motivational newsletters and microlearnings
  • Technical (and scientifically based) tools such as a glucometer to measure sugar intake, or a Moonbird, a device that helps control your breathing to reduce stress and improve your sleep quality

Measurable results and lasting impact

After the 8-week journey, participants will have the necessary tools, insights and techniques to continue the positive evolution themselves.

The Energy Journey is concluded with a second Human Energy Scan, which allows us to

  • Precisely analyse the results and chart the progress
  • Eventually detect new working points and guide the participants towards a new Journey around another wellbeing topic

The positive impact on the professional and personal lives of our participants shows the value of the Vitality Boost programme.

Its high quality and scientific foundation ensured a clear shift in mindset at ING, thanks in part to consistent and efficient communication.

The many positive reactions leave no doubt: a holistic wellbeing approach is possible even in the largest companies.

"This unique and holistic approach proves to be very effective and helps employees find more balance in their lives. I myself participated in the Trust and Stress programmes and still apply many of the insights and techniques in my daily life as well as in managing my team. It has been extremely valuable, both for my personal growth and for creating a supportive and balanced environment within my team."
