Heidi Nieboer

As a former police negotiator and leader, Heidi Niboer spent many years working in situations where tension ran high, emotions escalated and interests were directly opposed. She led negotiations and interventions in which listening, building trust and making decisions under pressure were critical. In her leadership, she consistently worked from a secure base: providing clear direction while creating space for dialogue and responsibility.

Today, Heidi translates this experience into interventions, simulations and keynotes at Better Minds. She combines her negotiation background with sharp insights into human behaviour, communication and decision-making in complex contexts. Secure-based leadership forms a central thread throughout her work.

Her expertise focuses on negotiation, leadership, communication and difficult conversations, with a strong emphasis on judgement and decision-making. Heidi is also the author of the book We’ll Work It Out, in which she translates the six principles of effective negotiation into everyday practice.

HEIDI'S OFFER

  • Workshop: Decision-Making Under Pressure (Simulation)

In this immersive simulation, participants are placed in a realistic scenario where time pressure, tension and conflicting interests converge. Just like in real crisis situations, information is incomplete and the stakes are high. The simulation reveals how people make decisions under pressure, which automatic patterns surface and how judgement can become distorted.

This is followed by an in-depth reflection: what happened, why did it happen and what does this mean for decision-making in daily work contexts? The power of this workshop lies in experiencing, not explaining.

  • Keynote: Secure-Based Leadership

In this keynote, Heidi explores what it truly means to lead from a secure base: combining clear direction with psychological safety. Leaders learn how to offer both structure and space, even when the context is uncertain or complex.

Drawing on her experience as a police negotiator, Heidi connects these insights to leadership challenges in organisations today. She makes tangible how trust, proximity and clear boundaries foster ownership, better decisions and sustainable performance among employees.

  • Keynote: The Six Principles of Effective Negotiation

Based on her book: We komen er wel uit.

Negotiation is not a trick, but a skill we use every day, often without calling it that. In this keynote, Heidi translates the six principles of effective negotiation into recognisable workplace situations.

She shows how successful negotiation is rooted in listening, distinguishing positions from underlying interests, dealing with emotions and making conscious choices under pressure. The keynote offers a clear and practical framework that helps participants stand their ground while remaining human, even in complex or confrontational conversations.

Always tailored to your context.
