Prepare. Peak. Recover.

Book session

In many organisations, the focus is on the moment itself.

The presentation, the decision, the deadline.

Yet research in sport psychology and cognitive neuroscience shows that performance under pressure is not created in the moment. It's the result of what happens before and after.

In this keynote or workshop, Joost Pluijms translates evidence-based principles from elite sport into leadership and organisational contexts. As a sport and performance psychologist (VSPN®) and PhD in Human Movement Sciences, he combines scientific expertise with hands-on experience in high-performance environments. His work focuses on how people think, decide and act under pressure, and how those processes can be trained.

Joost shows how to prepare for critical moments, stay effective under pressure, and recover deliberately to sustain performance over time.

At the core lies the Prepare – Peak – Recover model. A scientifically grounded framework that views performance not as a linear effort, but as a cyclical process of preparation, execution and recovery.

What you will learn:

  • PREPARE:  train before it happens
  • PEAK: perform when it counts
  • RECOVER: sustain performance

Enable your team to perform under pressure without burning out.

Timeline

PREPARE:

  • scenario thinking (“what if”)
  • mental rehearsal (imagery)
  • decision-making under uncertainty
  • Pressure training through a realistic simulation

PEAK:

  • Understanding pressure responses
  • The 3R model: register, release, refocus
  • Attention control and execution
  • Staying effective in chaos

RECOVER:

  • stress–recovery cycles
  • energy management
  • recognising and regulating load
  • building a personal recovery plan

Takeaways:

After this session, participants:

  • improve decision-making under pressure
  • reduce performance drop in critical moments
  • gain practical tools that can be applied immediately
  • experience greater control over energy, focus and behaviour
